4 Must-Read Space Opera Books for Sci-Fi Fans
Science fiction is one of the most popular genres around, and for good reason! It offers a glimpse into worlds that are both familiar and strange and allows us to explore the possibilities of what could be. If you're a fan of science fiction, then you'll definitely want to check out space opera. This subgenre offers all the excitement and adventure of science fiction, but with an added layer of epic scope and scale. In this blog post, I'll recommend 4 must-read space opera books for sci-fi fans like you!
Dune
Dune by Frank Herbert is one of the most popular and influential science fiction novels of all time. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, it tells the story of young Paul Atreides as he navigates the politics and intrigue of court life while also leading a rebellion against the tyrannical Emperor. Dune is a sweeping epic that will transport you to another world and leave you eager for more.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is another classic of science fiction. The book follows the hapless Arthur Dent as he tries to make sense of the strange and often absurd events that befall him after the Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a hilarious and heartwarming tale that will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about life, the universe, and everything.
Gideon the Ninth
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir is a more recent entry into the space opera genre, but it's already making waves with its inventive worldbuilding and queer protagonists. Gideon the Ninth follows the eponymous Gideon as she reluctantly teams up with her sworn enemy, Harrowhark Nonagesimus, to solve a mystery that could mean the difference between life and death. If you're looking for a space opera that breaks the mold, Gideon the Ninth is a must-read.
Leviathan Wakes
Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey is one of my personal favorites. It's the first book in The Expanse series, which is now a hugely popular TV show. Leviathan Wakes follows the crew of the ice freighter Canterbury as they investigate a distress call from an abandoned mining colony. What they find there will change their lives forever and set them on a course to uncover a conspiracy that could threaten the very future of humanity.
These are just a few of the great space opera books out there.
